Twenty-Eight Senators Sign Letter To President Obama

The NBAA and GAMA on Monday thanked a group of U.S. senators for reminding President Obama that they oppose the $100-per-flight user fee proposed in the president's fiscal year 2013 federal budget. In a recent letter, 28 senators told the president that bipartisan passage of the comprehensive, multi-year FAA reauthorization bill was "in part because it did not assess new user fees on general aviation (GA)." The letter was circulated by Senators Mark Begich (D-AK) and Mike Johanns (R-NE), co-chairs of the Senate GA Caucus.

195 members of Congress sign letter opposing user fee

Petri on March 1 fired off a letter bearing 195 congressional signatures to President Barack Obama, reminding him that user fees have been proposed by presidents of both parties but were overwhelmingly defeated each time. A user-fee proposal appears in the White House’s 2013 budget package.

Lorraine Howerton, AOPA vice president of legislative affairs, urged members to contact their member of Congress, let them know that user fees are a bad idea—they are inefficient, expensive to administer, and can compromise safety—then politely ask them to join Congressmen Petri, Costello, Graves, and Barrow by signing the letter to the president opposing aviation user fees. The deadline to sign is Feb. 28.
